Planning a wedding can be an overwhelming experience for everyone involved, especially the bride and the groom. Use this yearlong wedding checklist as a guide to help you remember what needs to be done and when.

12 months before wedding

Choose wedding date
Hire wedding consultant
Figure budget and sharing of expenses
Choose ceremony and reception sites. Your most time sensitive decision. Choosing to have them at the same location makes things easier. Determine type of wedding, location, theme, guests, formality, time of day. Secure dates.
Choose color scheme
Make up preliminary guest list
Select attendants & wedding party
Book ceremony officiant
Shop for wedding dress

8 to 10 months before wedding

Select caterer
Select photographer / videographer
Book entertainment for the reception
Reserve hotel rooms for out-of-town guests
Give wedding party a list of their responsibilities
Order wedding dress
Send save-the-date notices
Visit stores and set up gift registry
Obtain passports, visas, birth certificates and any documents need for travel or marriage license

6 to 8 months before wedding

Book ceremony musicians
Book reception musicians or DJs
Select bridesmaid’s dresses. Flower girl dress
Visit florists and book floral arrangements
Finalize guest list
Order invitations (and thank you cards)
Plan rehersal dinner. Make reservations.
Visit florists and book floral arrangements
Plan honeymoon. Reserve rooms & flights
Plan food and beverage choices for reception

 

4 to 6 months before wedding

Purchase wedding rings
Select songs for ceremony and reception
Meet with bakery and cake designer; order cake
Bridesmaid's dress fittings
Select and purchase each other's wedding gifts
Select shoes and accesssories for the bride
Wedding party gifts

Wedding decorations
If needed, buy honeymoon clothes
Book wedding transportation
Select ushers, ceremony readers and guest book attendant
Mail wedding invitations
Mail bridal shower invitations
Write original vows or ceremony & reception remarks
Meet with makeup artist and hairdresser. Do a trial run with both. Make appointments for the wedding day.
Finalize menu

1 to 2 months before wedding

Send shower gift thank you cards
Buy guest books, garter, ring pillow, toasting glasses.
Mail invitations to rehersal dinner
Final wedding dress fitting
Verify bridesmaid dresses have been altered
Wedding attire for all men
Order ceremony program
Plan bridesmaids lunch or get-together

2 to 4 weeks before wedding

Pick up wedding rings
Final wedding dress and bridesmaids fittings
Go over music selections with musicians, DJs
Assemble honeymoon tickets & hotel confirmation numbers
Apply for a marriage license
Apply for a marriage license
Go over final details with all your vendors
Finalize floral arrangements
Call those who haven’t yet RSVPd
Provide photographer / videographer with list of required shots
Final haircut – color touch-up.
Choose reception, head table and VIP seating

1 week before wedding

Call caterer/reception manager with final head count
Confirm arrangements & exchange emergency phone numbers with: ceremony officiant – musicians - caterer/reception - manager photographer – driver(s)
Put together an emergency kit: stain remover, emergency snacks, sewing kit, etc
Break in new shoes
Pack for honeymoon
Itinerary to wedding party

2 - 3 days before wedding

Check dress for touch-ups
Pick up men’s formalwear & check fit
Have nails done
Arrange for bridesmaid to take bridal gown to dry cleaners after reception

Day & Night Before / Rehersal Dinner

Pay final bills or preaddress checks
Rehearsal ceremony with wedding participants & immediate family
Make sure ushers know VIP seating arrangements for ceremony
Deliver personal props to ceremony site (unity candle, etc)
Go to bed at a reasonable hour
Charge cell phones
Pack honeymoon suite bag

The Day Of Wedding

Eat breakfast or lunch – helps to prevent growling stomach and fainting spells
Don't forget marriage license
Put engagement ring on right hand
Groom's ring to Maid of Honor and bride's ring to Best Man
Introduce honor attendants so they can handle questions or problems during reception
Take time to touch base with friends and family and relax together.

Minor glitches will happen – don’t overreact. Stay flexible.
